If you have been following me over the last year, you know I have gone down the rabbit hole of supplements. I am always looking for a way to optimize my skin health; supplements were my new frontier.
I have built a healthy+strong skincare routine and eat foods that nourish my skin, but I want more! My intention has always been to age gracefully without using botox or fillers. I am pro-aging, but that doesn’t mean I will not fight/healthily slow the process. In a whole-body approach to aging, with the right foods+skincare+suppliments+no-invasive treatments, we can age confidently and unapologetically without feeling like we need to meet society’s idea of what aging (or not aging) should look like.
After a year of experimenting with supplements, here are my three must haves.
#1. Vitamin C
Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is necessary for all body tissues’ growth, development, and repair. It’s involved in many body functions, including collagen formation, iron absorption, proper immune system functioning, wound healing, and the maintenance of cartilage, bones, and teeth.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that protects against damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals and toxic chemicals and pollutants like cigarette smoke. Free radicals can build up and contribute to developing conditions like cancer, heart disease, and arthritis.
Vitamin C is your skin’s bomb squad to neutralize free radical damage. Free radicals are anti-oxygen bombs that trigger inflammation and cascades of damage. These highly unstable molecules are missing an electron and, in an attempt to stabilize, steal electrons from otherwise healthy cells. How can free radicals be stopped? Neutralize the “bomb” – so to speak. Antioxidants donate an electron to free radicals before they can cause undue damage to the skin. Vitamin C is one such antioxidant that can neutralize and remove free radicals, thereby minimizing the visible impact of exposure to pollution, particulate matter and other types of environmental stress.
Vitamin C should be a non-negotiable inside in out! We recommend Cymbotika Liposomal Vitamin C internally & Eminence Organics 16% Citrus+Kale Potent C+E Serum topically.
#2. Fish Oils (Omega 3)
Fish oil is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for developing the eyes, brain, and reproductive cells properly. They are also vital for heart and lung health and the optimal functioning of the immune and endocrine systems.
RENEW+PROTECT is a step in the right direction regarding internal skin rejuvenation. Unlike any other skincare product, it goes deep to address the root factors of your skin health. It produces a broad range of clinically proven skin benefits, such as increased elasticity & firmness, hydration, reduced redness and roughness, and protection against UV-induced sunburn. These vitamins help reduce your chance of sunburn by 84% when taken daily.
RENEW+PROTECT is the only anti-age skincare product licensed and sold in Canada with ꜛ levels of DHA+EPA mixed with a host of skin-loving ingredients like borage oil, zeaxanthin, lutein, and Vit D. Externally; we love the essential fatty acids from Eminence Organics Triple C Firming Oil.
#3. Glutathione
Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant naturally produced in the liver that protects the body against free radicals and maintains cellular health. Steady levels of glutathione can help your body renew, brighten, and protect your skin against premature aging from the inside out.
Glutathione decreases your skin’s melanin (pigmentation), decreases wrinkles, and increases skin elasticity. By inhibiting tyrosinase (melanin-producing enzyme), skin pigment production is reduced.
It is often referred to as the master antioxidant because it can be found in nearly every cell in the body. Glutathione recharges other antioxidants like vitamin C, making them more effective at fighting inflammation. Research indicates that eating sulfur-rich foods increases glutathione levels, and guess what? Fish is high in sulfur.
Can you see why I love these three? They all protect against free radical damage and boost each when used together. That sounds like a triple threat to me!
