5 Dorm Room Must-Haves for Actual Wellness (Not Just Aesthetics)

A dorm room desk setup with a lamp, laptop, and backpack, the kind of space where dorm room must haves matter more than decor.

Every dorm room must-haves list out there is bedding and command hooks. Here’s the version nobody puts on the registry.

My upstairs landing currently looks like the Winners aisle exploded on it. Twin XL sheets in three different shades of blue, a shower caddy that cost more than my first apartment’s damage deposit, and somewhere under all of it, a laundry bag big enough to fit a small child. In just over two weeks, all of it gets stuffed into a car and driven to her new room.

Which I’ve seen in person, and can only describe as a closet for two. And somewhere in the middle of that pile, I kept sneaking in a few things that have nothing to do with fitting in and everything to do with actually feeling okay in there. Twenty-five years of doing skin and nervous systems for a living, apparently, does not just switch off because it’s my kid I am packing for.

Okay. Let’s rip the bandage off and start with the expensive one, because honestly, everything after this is going to feel like a deal by comparison.

The Weighted Blanket

Yes, it’s the priciest thing on the list. No, I am not sorry. My whole household has slept under one for years, and not because it was trending on somebody’s feed, I promise you. It works. At home we use Hush blankets. In the treatment rooms at Enrapt it’s the knitted ones, because they look prettier under the lighting and nobody wants to unwind under something that looks like a moving blanket. Same job either way, though. Weight calms a nervous system down the same way a swaddle calms a newborn, the same way a hug calms basically anyone.

A dorm room is loud, and unfamiliar, and shared with a total stranger whose sleep schedule has nothing to do with yours. That’s a lot for a body to sort through every single night. A weighted blanket won’t change the roommate, or the noise, or how unfamiliar the room feels. What it does do is help the nervous system actually settle, the kind of settle that gets someone to sleep instead of lying there wired until 2am.

Next, The Humidifier

I’ll be honest with you, ours were not some carefully considered, aesthetically-approved purchase. They’re whatever had decent reviews and popped up on Amazon at eleven at night when I typed in “humidifier.” That was it. That was the entire research process. Nobody tells you that half of these buildings are old enough the air feels like it hasn’t moved since the Eighties, or that the heat runs like it’s auditioning for a sauna come January. Dry air pulls moisture straight out of skin, and skin that’s already dealing with finals and a new roommate and dining hall food does not have a lot left in reserve. A humidifier is never going to be exciting. It just does its job quietly, in the background, while everyone’s attention is on literally anything else.

Then There’s The Water Filtering Jug

To be clear not a reusable bottle, everyone already has four of those lying around, one’s in the car, one’s missing its lid, one’s growing something questionable in the bottom as we speak. A filtering jug is a different animal, the kind you fill up and forget about in the fridge. Dorm tap water is one of life’s great unknowns. Technically safe. Allegedly. Tastes faintly like it’s been through a swimming pool and a personal crisis.

Hydration is the most boring piece of advice in all of wellness, right up there with “get more sleep,” and also somehow still the truest thing anyone will ever tell you. Skin, energy, whether a person can survive a 9am after an all-nighter, it all comes back to whether there’s actually water going in and not just iced coffee and vibes.

Real Food

I mean, not the beige, shelf-stable, engineered-in-a-lab stuff that somehow counts as a meal plan option. Fruit that hasn’t been freeze-dried into oblivion. Meat sticks, a block of cheese, something with actual protein in it that isn’t wrapped in more branding than nutrition.

Cut vegetables and hummus, because eating a vegetable should not require more effort than an eighteen year old is willing to give it at 9pm between classes. I say this to clients constantly when they want to skip straight to serums: the body pulls resources from wherever it can find them, and skin is always last on that list. Feed it well, it shows. Feed it dining hall pizza for an entire semester, that shows too.

And Skincare!

Yes, it’s making the list, but not the version you’re picturing. Cleanse, tone, moisturize…..That’s it. That’s the whole routine, basically the shampoo and conditioner of skincare. Three steps will survive a college semester in a way a ten-step routine never will, because nobody halfway through an all-nighter is reaching for a five-minute double cleanse and a jade roller.

They’re reaching for whatever takes thirty seconds and doesn’t require a single functioning brain cell. Consistency beats complexity every single time, especially for a nervous system running on four hours of sleep and dining hall coffee.

One last one, and it’s not really part of the five: an air purifier. Leighton has asthma, and some of these dorms were built before “air quality” was even a phrase people used. And also, come on, is my kid going to dust? You’ve seen her room at home. An air purifier quietly does the job nobody in an eighteen year old’s body is volunteering for. No chore chart required.

So in two weeks, all of it goes in the car. The blanket, the humidifier, the jug, the fridge staples, the three bottles that make up a whole skincare routine and one air purifier.

None of it makes that room any less small. It doesn’t make the goodbye at the curb any less strange either, if I’m honest. But she will be sleeping under something with actual weight. Breathing air that isn’t working against her, drinking water that doesn’t taste like a pool.

That’s not nothing. Some of it, I can control. The closet for two, I cannot.
