You might be tempted to roll your eyes at the thought of another plea to “shop local.” I get it. We all know we should support small businesses. But how often do we nod in agreement and then click over to the Big A or Big T for convenience, all while lamenting the lack of unique, charming shops in our neighborhoods?
Here’s the truth: that first action—the choice to shop big—is exactly why independent stores are closing their doors. Small shops are the heartbeat of our communities, run by real people, not faceless corporations. And these small-business owners don’t just take; they give back. Every dollar spent locally ripples through the community.
Here’s a stat worth repeating: When you shop at one of those giant online retailers, only 5 cents of every dollar makes its way back into your community. But when you shop local? A whopping 68 cents of every dollar stays in your community, strengthening local businesses, supporting jobs, and building a vibrant economy. It’s a domino effect: stronger businesses create stronger communities.
And guess what? Shopping local doesn’t mean you have to brave the cold or rush to a store. Many local businesses (including us!) offer online shopping, curbside pickup, or delivery. Supporting small shops is now just as convenient as clicking over to the big guys—but it makes a much bigger impact.
Now don’t get me wrong—I’m not perfect. I do shop at the Big A, but only as a last resort, not a first. There’s a difference between convenience and habit, and I try to make sure I’m choosing local as often as I can.
For me, shopping local isn’t just a motto; it’s a lifestyle. But I like to take it one step further—I focus on supporting Canadian companies as much as I can. In fact, 95% of the products I carry in my spa come from small Canadian brands. By choosing Canadian-made, I’m helping businesses in my own country grow, thrive, and in turn, give back to their local communities.
So, the next time you’re looking for a gift, a self-care treat, or something special, pause before heading to those big-name giants. Think about your neighbor who owns the boutique down the street or that local skincare line made with love right here in Canada. Your choice matters, and together, we can keep our communities—and our country—glowing.
